North Shields Fish quay 1930

It is said that North Shields Fish Quay began life in 1225 as a simple village of shielings (huts) from which the town of North Shields took its name. The quay was originally located here to serve the nearby Tynemouth Castle and Priory. In 1936, 70 trawlers were based in North Shields but by 1946 the number based here was only 38. Today, only 20 (approximately) fishing vessels are based in North Shields.

The Fish Quay has recently undergone major regeneration. Clifford's Fort which dates from 1676 is one of the earliest surviving coastal batteries in Britain. It is concealed behind fish processing buildings and in time it is hoped that this will be uncovered.
